Officials have identified a 73-year-old California man who died after attempting a parachute jump off a bridge over the Snake River Canyon in Idaho.

The Twin Falls County coroner on Friday said James E. Hickey of Claremont, California, died Thursday evening when his parachute deployed too late and he landed in the Snake River.

Coroner Gene Turley said blunt force trauma was the cause of death.

Several of Hickey's friends retrieved his body from the water and brought him to the dock at a nearby park. Medics pronounced him dead.

Authorities say Hickey was an experienced jumper.

The Perrine Bridge over the canyon is popular with such jumpers. The bridge is about 500 feet above the river.
