NEWARK, N.J. – A civil rights group has settled lawsuits against four New Jersey school districts and a charter school whose enrollment practices it charged make it harder for children of immigrants living in the country unlawfully to enroll.
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey said Monday it has settled the lawsuits against the Fair Lawn, Jamesburg, Spotswood and Port Republic school districts, as well as the Jersey City Global Charter School.
The group says the districts wrongly force parents to produce either a driver's license or state ID, which immigrants living in the country illegally wouldn't possess.
The ACLU says the schools agreed to remove problematic requirements from their forms and clarify that documents revealing immigration status aren't required.
