Baltimore officer says custody death charges surprised her
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}One of six Baltimore police officers once charged in the death of a black man fatally injured in a police van says she was surprised to hear her name when charges were announced.
Sgt. Alicia White, the first accused officer to speak publicly, said in interviews with WMAR-TV and The Baltimore Sun that she was devastated by State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's announcement after Freddie Gray's 2015 death.
White was charged with manslaughter, assault and misconduct. Prosecutors dropped all charges after three officers were acquitted. White maintains she did nothing wrong and says she prayed for Gray's family and for her hometown as unrest broke out.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Five officers are suing Mosby for defamation. White says her career was derailed, her engagement ended and without pay, she faced financial difficulties.
