Attacked California deputy released from hospital

A Northern California sheriff's deputy is out of the hospital after she allegedly was beaten and attacked with a Taser by an inmate who escaped from her custody.

Santa Cruz County sheriff's Sgt. Dan Campos says the unnamed deputy was released late Monday from Dominican Hospital in Santa Cruz.

Authorities say she was punched several times in the face and bitten severely on the finger by 24-year-old Maurice Ainsworth. Campos says Ainsworth also caused lacerations to the deputy's ear when he attacked her with her Taser.

Authorities say the deputy was taking the 6-foot-7-inch, 275-pound Ainsworth to Dominican Hospital earlier Monday when he escaped. Police captured Ainsworth in a vacant house following searches on the ground and by air.

Ainsworth had been in jail on charges stemming from a home invasion robbery.
