At least 2,012 US military deaths in Afghanistan since 2001

As of Tuesday, October 23, 2012, at least 2,012 members of the U.S. military had died in Afghanistan as a result of the U.S.-led invasion of Afghanistan in late 2001, according to an Associated Press count.

The AP count is one less than the Defense Department's tally, last updated Monday at 10 a.m. EDT.

At least 1,679 military service members have died in Afghanistan as a result of hostile action, according to the military's numbers.

Outside of Afghanistan, the department reports at least 118 more members of the U.S. military died in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. Of those, 11 were the result of hostile action.

The AP count of total OEF casualties outside of Afghanistan is four more than the department's tally.

The Defense Department also counts three military civilian deaths.

Since the start of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, 17,790 U.S. service members have been wounded in hostile action, according to the Defense Department.

The latest identifications reported by the military:

— Pfc. Shane G. Wilson, 20, of Kuna, Idaho, died Oct. 18, in Khost province, Afghanistan; assigned to 3rd Battalion, 187th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.

— Sgt. Robert J. Billings, 30, of Clarksville, Va., died Oct. 13, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Spc. Brittany B. Gordon, 24, of St. Petersburg, Fla., died Oct. 13, in Kandahar province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked her unit with an improvised explosive device; assigned to the 572 Military Intelligence Company, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Cmdr. Joel Del Mundo Tiu, 49, of Manila, Philippines, died Oct. 12 as a result of non-combat related injuries. He was assigned to Logistics Forces, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, Manama, Bahrain.

— Sgt. 1st Class Ryan J. Savard, 29, of Sierra Vista, Ariz., died Oct. 13, in Khanabad District, Afghanistan, from small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations; assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Fort Bragg, N. C.

— Sgt. Thomas R. Macpherson, 26, of Long Beach, Calif., died Oct. 12, in Andar District, Afghanistan, from small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations; assigned to the 2d Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Wash.

— Culinary Specialist 2nd Class Milton W. Brown, 28, of Dallas, Texas, died Aug. 4, from a noncombat-related incident in Rota, Spain; assigned to Strike Fighter Squadron (VFA) 137, Lemoore, Calif.
