A man accused of holding several people hostage inside a suburban Detroit bank after a failed robbery has made his first court appearance.

Devin Rodriguez appeared in federal court Friday in Detroit to face charges of attempted bank robbery and brandishing a firearm.

He remains in federal custody pending a Monday detention hearing, and it isn't clear if Rodriguez has an attorney.

Authorities haven't released his age or city of residence.

A criminal complaint says Rodriguez entered a Citizens Bank in Canton Township on Thursday afternoon, pulled out a semi-automatic weapon and announced that he was robbing the bank.

He then allegedly held three employees and a customer hostage before the situation ended peacefully hours later and he surrendered.

Canton Township is about 30 miles (48 kilometers) west of Detroit.
