The new Veterans Affairs chief will visit the Phoenix health care facility that was the initial focus of what has become a nationwide scandal.

Acting VA Secretary Sloan Gibson is scheduled to meet Thursday with staff at Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center.

Officials say Gibson plans to discuss actions taken to address allegations that numerous veterans have died while waiting to get an appointment.

A report by the VA's inspector general last week found 1,700 Phoenix area veterans were "at risk of being lost or forgotten" after being kept off the official waiting list.

Gibson said Wednesday his department has reached out to those veterans and will continue to get in touch with veterans across the country.

Gibson took over the VA Friday after Secretary Eric Shinseki resigned.
