74-year-old Maine landlord charged with murder in shooting deaths of teenage apartment tenants

A 74-year-old Maine man is charged in the shooting deaths of two tenants in an apartment he rented out at his home, and detectives are investigating whether the violence is connected to a landlord-tenant dispute.

State police say James Pak was arrested Saturday night following a standoff at his home in Biddeford, about 15 miles south of Portland. He is charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of 19-year-old Derrick Thompson and Thompson's girlfriend, 18-year-old Alivia Welch.

Thompson's mother, 44-year-old Susan Johnson, reported the shootings. She was being treated for a gunshot wound at a Portland hospital.

Johnson and her 6-year-old son also live in the apartment. Her son was not hurt.

Pak is being held in jail and is expected to make a court appearance this week.
