ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Six New Mexico teens face murder charges after authorities say one of them gunned down a 60-year-old man in his driveway while the group was out wandering through a neighborhood breaking into cars and homes.
Albuquerque police spokesman Tanner Tixier says the boys were arrested Thursday. They range from 14 to 17 years old.
Arrest warrant affidavits say the teens had been stealing from several cars and homes in a neighborhood on the city's northeast side on June 26 before one of them shot and killed Stephen Gerecke.
Officers found Gerecke dead in his driveway with multiple gunshot wounds.
Tixier says an investigation by a police task force and investigators from the district attorney's office led to the juveniles' arrest. Charges against the teens include murder, burglary and assault with a deadly weapon.
