5 injured after horse gets spooked at Washington fair

A spooked horse ran through a crowd injuring five people, including at least one child, at a Washington state fair.

KOMO-TV reports a vendor was with a horse and empty carriage Friday afternoon when the horse became frightened and bolted down the midway through a crowd at the Southwest Washington Fair in Centralia, about 80 miles south of Seattle.

Lewis County spokeswoman Paulette Young says five people were injured. She said four were taken to a hospital for treatment.

A man who was hurt was eventually flown by helicopter to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. A spokesperson said the man was in serious condition Friday evening.

Young didn't know the extent of the other victims' injuries.

The horse was captured and returned to an enclosed area. It wasn't immediately known what spooked the horse.

Young says fair activities were continuing but horse and carriage rides have been suspended.

The Lewis County Sheriff's Office is investigating.
