Memphis airport closes checkpoint, moves Southwest counter

Memphis International Airport has closed one of three security checkpoints and relocated Southwest Airlines' ticket counter to the centermost lobby.

The Commercial Appeal reports (http://bit.ly/1X6AOpv) that the changes occurred Thursday.

Southwest, which accounts for 18 percent of Memphis passengers, opened in Terminal B ticket lobby, next to the airport's largest and busiest security checkpoint. Southwest was previously located in Concourse A, and was virtually the only airline that used Security Checkpoint A.

Security Checkpoint A closed due to Transportation Security Administration staffing limits and an upcoming revamp of airport concourses. Airport president Scott Brockman says Checkpoint A was the smallest and least efficient operated by TSA, which had been asking for the closure so it could concentrate employees in checkpoints B and C.

Waiting times at the remaining checkpoints are expected to be the same or shorter.
