Train outside Atlanta Airport derails, slows service to air hub

An out-of-service train stuck on the tracks disrupted service to and from Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Wednesday morning.

Reps for Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) tweeted early that an "emergency situation" has disabled service for the airport’s station, the Ledger-Enquirer reports, with officials confirming that a train was stuck on the northbound tracks.

For the time being, MARTA is running shuttle buses between Hartsfield-Jackson airport and the College Park station as workers remove two rail cars, as per WSB-TV.

“Due to emergency conditions at the Airport, delays continuing on the N/S line. SB trains discontinuing service at College Park. Shuttle service continuing between Airport and College Park,” reps for the transit hub reported early today. “We apologize for any inconvenience.”

MARTA first tweeted around 9 p.m. on Jan. 15 that "an emergency situation" left trains unable to service the airport's station, as per the Associated Press.

No passengers were on board at the time, as the train headed to the depot. The airport station is the end of MARTA's red and gold lines.

It remains unclear at this time exactly what happened.

In the hours since, locals have taken to Twitter to share images of the affected train, as well as MARTA staffers working to resolve the issue.

Hartsfield-Jackson airport currently has one of the longest waiting times at security screening checkpoints, according data released by the Transportation Security Administration, amid the partial government shutdown.
