And now some fresh pickings from the Political Grapevine...
Fool Me Once...
Not a banner few months for the Capitol Hill police.
First, letting a gyrocopter land at the capitol.
Now, leaving guns in restrooms.
At least three loaded and unattended guns have been found around the Capitol grounds.
One belonged to a member of Speaker John Boehner's protection detail.
The Hill reports it was found in a bathroom by a seven or eight-year-old boy.
The Glock firearms do not include conventional safeties, so they can be fired pretty easily.
To make matters worse, the department's statement did not start with an apology -- instead taking aim at the leaker of the information.
Quote -- "Recent media reports...should not have been released to the public, as these are law enforcement sensitive, internal personnel matters currently under investigation."
A bipartisan group of lawmakers is calling for an investigation.
The Wait Isn't Over
The backlog of Freedom of Information (FOIA) requests almost doubled last year.
The Justice Department's annual report says the pending requests increased from 96,000 in fiscal year 2013 to 160,000 last year.
Homeland Security is responsible for more than 100,000 of those.
The results fly in the face of the president's 2009 Open Government directive which called for backlogs to be reduced by 10 percent each year.
The Justice Department cites staffing and budget cuts as primary reasons, as well the three week government shutdown when requests came in but could not be handled.
The Greatest Generation
Finally, don't mess with a vet no matter the age.
Arthur Kamberis is a 95-year-old World War II veteran and he fought off a would-be robber with his cane.
After the vet hit the thief a few times, a Good Samaritan jumped in to help.
Kamberis did not want to lose his wallet.
Quote -- "I had my credit card, my license, my grandchildren's pictures in there and all sorts of stuff it would have been wicked for me to replace."
That Good Samaritan eventually drove him home.
