MODESTO, Calif. – Washington's deputy police chief is disputing Rep. Gary Condit's assertion that he cooperated fully with investigators after Chandra Levy's disappearance.
Terrance Gainer said "It took us three interviews and a lot of effort to get as far as we got."
A police source has said the congressman acknowledged an affair with Levy in his third interview with investigators last month.
In an interview Thursday night with ABC's Connie Chung, Condit acknowledged that he had a "very close" relationship with Levy, but denied he had any role in her disappearance four months ago. Asked repeatedly, Condit would not say whether the two had a sexual relationship.
Condit said he was honoring a request by Levy's parents, who said they wanted information that would help find their daughter, not details of any relationship she had.
