Wanda Sykes Predictably Partisan

Like a cloud of stupid, the White House Correspondents' Dinner came and went and once again your charming host was not invited. No matter, I had other plans: There was a "Caroline in the City" marathon on Lifetime and that pint of Ben and Jerry's wasn't going to gorge itself.
Anyway, it appears the press is all over Wanda Sykes' speech, which is funny, because she performed the way you'd expect her to perform: meekly. Instead of taking risks, she played it safe; bean bags have more edge.
But for that reason, I guess I can't see much to get angry about. I mean, if there's ever been a more predictable Saturday night, I've yet to hear about it.

Palin joke? Check.
Rush Limbaugh joke? Check.
Steer clear of any gay stuff about marriage and the military? Checkity-check-check.

Now, for a gay comic like Wanda, you'd think that last part might have been a priority for teasing. But come on: It's just bad taste to actually make a joke that might stick, especially if the target is your super-groovy Messiah and Owen Wilson is in the audience.
So instead, Wanda did what Wanda was supposed to do: tell jokes that meet the assumptions of those giddy folks in the room. But it's a real shame that the one joke that's getting all the play wasn't even hers. Remember, Bill Maher had wished Rush dead on his show over a year ago.
She needs to steal from better comedians.
