Police in Turkey have accidentally fired a tear gas canister into a school building, hurting dozens of children including a baby.

Television footage has emerged showing the children fainting, crying and wiping their eyes after police mistakenly fired the gas at their school.

About 10 children and a four-month-old baby were taken to the hospital suffering the effects of the noxious fumes.

Tear gas irritates the eyes, nose, mouth and lungs. It can cause crying, sneezing, coughing, difficulty breathing and temporary blindness.

At least one woman was also reported to have fainted as families rushed to the scene.

Police had been responding to a disturbance among residents of the Altinsehir shanty town near Istanbul when the mistake happened.

Residents there were protesting against the decision of the local authorities to tear down unlicensed buildings.

The broadcasts show protesters throwing stones at police and setting tires on fire.

Police were not immediately available to comment.
