The Road to Richard Nixon's Resignation

January 21, 1969 — Richard Nixon is inaugurated as the 37th president of the United States.

June 17, 1972 — Five men are arrested while attempting to place bugs in the Democratic National Committee offices at the Watergate hotel.

October 10, 1972 — The FBI confirms that the Watergate break-in is part of a political spying and sabotage campaign run on behalf of Nixon's re-election campaign.

November 7, 1972 — President Nixon is reelected to a second term in office.

January 30, 1973 — G. Gordon Liddy and James McCord, Jr., both former Nixon staffers, are convicted of conspiracy, amongst other offenses, in the Watergate burglary.

May 18, 1973 — Hearings held by the Senate Watergate Committee begin airing on national television.

July 23, 1973 — After it is revealed that he taped all conversations and calls in his office, Nixon refuses to provide the Senate Watergate Committee with these recordings.

April 30, 1974 — The White House provides the House Judiciary Committee with tape transcripts (totaling 1200 pages). The committee continues to insist that the White House turn over the physical tapes.

August 8, 1974 — Facing impeachment in the House of Representatives, Richard Nixon resigns from the office of President.
