Federal workplace safety officials in southwestern Illinois are investigating the death of a steel worker who apparently fell through a roof.

The Madison County coroner's office says 27-year-old Jeffrey Pace died Wednesday morning at a hospital after an accident at Alton Steel.

Investigators with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are looking into the incident.

Police say Pace was working on a new roof portion when he fell about 60 feet to the ground.

An autopsy was planned to determine whether anything such as a medical condition contributed to the accident.
