Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

A roadside bomb exploded Thursday near a U.S. military vehicle near the Afghan border with Pakistan (search), killing an American service member and wounding another, the military said.
An Afghan soldier also was wounded, the statement said. The attack occurred near a base at Urgun in Paktika (search) province.
The statement did not specify which branch of the U.S. military the troops belonged to.

Afghan troops deployed to provide security at the site after the attack, the statement said.
The death brings to 174 the number of U.S. troops killed in and around Afghanistan since Operation Enduring Freedom (search) began in 2001. The latest death came just over a week after two U.S. service members were killed in separate attacks.
