Scary Skinny and Sad: Katie Holmes Shocks With Gaunt Appearance, Is Life Getting Worse for Katie Holmes? | Chris Brown Tips Off Pap to Prove Rihanna Reconciliation? Is Rihanna Crazy or Just Hopelessly in Love? | Penelope Cruz Still 'Insecure' & Heath Ledger's Sister Opens Up About Michelle Williams | Borat Comes Out of Retirement
Pop Tarts spies spotted the 30-year-old actress and her husband Tom Cruise dining with actor John Lithgow and his wife at West Hollywood's popular Italian restaurant Il Sole on Saturday evening, and although Cruise was overtly cheerful we're told Holmes was super skinny and seemed miserable.
"Katie and Tom ordered a meal to share but Katie hardly ate a thing and just picked at her food," said an insider. "She barely said a single word and looked very uncomfortable. People couldn't stop whispering about how gaunt she looked."
Prior to their dinner meeting, security for the high-profile pair insisted on doing a sweep of the restaurant, and even though they requested a high-chair, Cruise and Holmes showed up sans Suri but instead with Cruise's adopted son, Conner. After the quick meal, the "Top Gun" star did his usual polite ritual of stopping by the kitchen to shake hands with the chef and kitchen crew before the three scurried into their chauffeured SUV with curtained windows.
According to an inside source, Katie's return to being itty bitty is a sign of stress both in her personal and professional life.
"She is constantly flying back and forth between New York and Los Angeles — sometimes all in one day — and gets really run-down trying to keep everyone happy," said our insider, adding that hubby Tom is always concerned about the health of his beloved and they are still very happily married despite numerous reports to the contrary. The rumor mill is even churning that the two are prepping to conceive baby number two in the very near future. Stay tuned.
Despite their very public bust-up a few weeks ago, Chris Brown and Rihanna spent the weekend together sorting things out inside Diddy's $14.5 million Miami Mansion. We're told Brown was so desperate to prove that he and Rihanna are reconciling their romance that he called up a photog to tip them off that were heading out late Saturday night to the Setai together. However security for the luxurious property were apparently on high-alert and stopped any pesky paps from even getting close to the estranged couple who obviously have a lot of issues to sort thru.
“Everybody makes mistakes,” an inside source said, hinting that they might officially be back together.
Penelope Cruz Still "Insecure" & Heath Ledger's Sister Opens Up About Michelle Williams
Just because Penelope Cruz took home the Golden statue last Sunday night for Best Supporting Actress (she also won Best Actress in 2006 for "Volver") doesn't mean that she's anymore confident than she was when she started out in the entertainment arena several years ago.
"I'm always insecure on the set no matter what," Cruz confirmed backstage. "When you're working with Woody Allen you know that you can trust the person that you're working with and if he doesn't like something he will tell you, but he's honest and that's what counts for me."
The Spanish starlet has had to stand up to years of harsh criticism over poor pronunciation of the English language, but it's that negativity that has spurred her success.
"Sometimes invalidations like that ... I have to keep climbing mountains and sometimes there are some things that are better not to listen, it's better not to engage in those debates," she added. "So could you work in America if you have an accent? Yes, you can. And that has been changing in the last 10 or 15 years; it was much harder before."
Meanwhile Heath Ledger's parents and sister Kate stayed strong throughout last week's emotional ceremony as they took to the stage to accept Ledger's award for Best Supporting Actor, where even the likes of Mickey Rourke, Angelina Jolie, Anne Hathaway and Robert Downey Jr. succumbed to the waterworks. And even though Ledger's talent and tragic passing still remain the talk of Tinseltown, his three-year-old daughter Matilda remains unaware of the extra attention.
"Michelle (Williams) keeps her very closeted. I [don't] think she'll really know very much about the fuss of what's going on, which I think is a good thing," dad Kim said, adding that the Oscar will remain "somewhere secure" until Matilda is 18 and able to retrieve it.
As for all those rumors about rocky relations between Williams and Heath's immediate family — that's all they are, rumors.
"We're very close with Michelle. She's doing an amazing job with Matilda, and we speak all the time so we're in constant contact and always will be," Kate said.
Ledger will still live on in yet one more film to be released this year ("The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus") but it sounds as though he might have more masterpieces of a different kind in the family vault.
"Heath was extremely talented in a lot of different areas," said Kim. "You might get to see this in the future, but we never knew which way he would go."
In December 2007, Sacha Baron Cohen announced that he was severing ties with his alter-ego Borat and putting the buffoon from Kazakhstan into retirement, telling the AP that "admitting he would never play the character again was quite a sad thing."
But Cohen has decided to bring Borat back to life just one last time, and for a good cause. As part of the eBay Giving Works/Auction Cause initiative to raise funds for International Giving Works, one lucky bidder can have Borat record a personal voicemail message.
So far Borat is leading the race, with fans willing to spend over $500 on the customized message, but also lending their star-powered voices to the cause by recording a voicemail just for you are Isla Fisher, Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, Chris Rock, Cindy Crawford, Brooke Shields, Elizabeth Banks and Billy Crystal.
