FISHKILL, N.Y. – Two men suspected of killing a Fishkill family and setting a fire to hide the murders were also committing a robbery at the time, according to a criminal complaint filed against the two men.
Mark Serrano, 29, and Charles Gilleo Jr., 31, were each charged with one count of second-degree murder in the death of Manuel "Tony" Morey, state police said.
A court document obtained Monday by the Poughkeepsie Journal accused the men of first-degree robbery at the home the Morey family rented, but no robbery charges have been filed.
No charges were filed in the deaths of the four other family members found in the home. Prosecutors and investigators have said they believe Serrano and Gilleo killed Morey, his wife and the couple's three children.
Tony Morey died from a single gunshot wound to the neck, according to autopsy reports. Tina Morey died of gunshot wounds to the chest and head, while Antonio, 13, and Adam, 10, died of multiple stab wounds. Ryan, 6, died of blunt force trauma to the head.
A grand jury will convene this week and consider additional charges, police said.
Police said they are not pursuing any other suspects or leads in the case, but have not discussed a motive.
Officials have said the Serrano and Gilleo were partners with Tony Morey in a small, local drug dealing operation.
State police investigators said that Tony Morey was a known low-level crack cocaine dealer and user, and had an arrest record for minor offenses.
Serrano and Gilleo are being held without bail at Dutchess County Jail. It was unclear late Monday whether either had an attorney. A public defender had not been assigned to the case as of Monday afternoon.
The suspects were arrested late last week and are due in Fishkill town court Thursday morning.
The family was found after a fire ravaged the wood-frame house Jan. 19 in the town of Fishkill, 60 miles north of New York City.
All five were dead before the house caught fire, said Dr. Kari Reiber, chief medical examiner in Dutchess County.
