A Gallup Police Department spokesman says a single-engine airplane carrying a Corrales man and a 14-year-old girl crashed shortly before noon Saturday in an open field in Gallup.

Lt. Rick White says pilot Curtis Smith was giving rides to children during an event at the Gallup Municipal Airport when the plane's engine failed shortly after takeoff.

White says the plane crashed in a field in Gallup.

White says Smith and the girl, whose name was unknown, were treated at a local hospital for minor injuries.

The Federal Aviation Administration was expected to arrive in Gallup on Sunday to investigate the crash.
