The fatal shooting of reporter Kenji Nagai in Myanmar was “accidental,” top Myanmar officials told the Deputy Foreign Minister Mitoji Yabunaka on Tuesday.
Nagai, a journalist for Tokyo-based APF News, was shot dead, during a monk-led protest in Myanmar.
According to The Japan Times, Myanmar Information Minister Kyaw Hsan told Yabunaka “the authorities did not shoot a Japanese person on purpose…it was accidental in the midst of a series of actions to disperse the protest."

Yabunaka refutes Hsan’s claim saying the video footage of Nagai’s death showed him shot from behind at point-blank range, the website reported.
