Memphis Zookeeper Stable After Tiger Attack

A zookeeper is in stable condition after being bitten in the leg by a Bengal tiger, a spokesman for the Memphis Zoo says.

Spokesman Drew Smith told MyFOXMemphis.com that the zookeeper, whose name was not released, was bitten early Sunday in the upper right calf by Kumari, a 3-year-old female tiger in a secure area of the zoo.

It was immediately unclear whether the tiger, one of three Bengal tigers at the zoo, was provoked.

The well-trained and highly experience zookeeper is expected to make a full recovery.

The zoo's Crisis Team responded immediately after the attack, Smith said.

"It's made up of zoo keepers that know these animals best and how to handle them the animal," Smith told MyFOXMemphis.com. "We got it back into a caged area … We put it back under containment."

Smith said an investigation into the incident has been launched.
