Majette to Go for Georgia Senate Seat

The race for the U.S. Senate in Georgia grew more intense on Monday when first-term Democratic Rep. Denise Majette (search) announced she is joining the contest for the seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Sen. Zell Miller (search).

Majette, who defeated Cynthia McKinney (search) in the 2002 4th Congressional District primary and then went on to win the general election, is taking a big leap, jumping into the race against two state senators in the July 20 Democratic primary.

Though barely through her first term of Congress, she is the highest-profile Democrat vying for the spot.

Two GOP U.S. representatives as well as two prominent Atlanta businessmen are running for the Republican Party nomination. Majette said none of them is looking at the important issues of the day.

"The Republicans keep trotting out their right-wing rhetoric on God, guns and gays in an attempt to divide the electorate and distract us from the serious problems that they are unwilling to address," she said.

But at least one political analyst suggests Majette may be out of touch with the larger Georgia electorate.

Majette supporters admit that her Senate race is a long shot as she is still relatively unknown despite the fact she ousted McKinney, who is coming back this year for a rematch for the congressional seat.
