Florida Rejects Bid to Put Slot Machines at Miami Airport

A defeat to a bid to put slot machines at Miami International Airport.

State regulators rejected the proposal Friday, citing a variety of concerns. The airport was looking to the slots as part of a wide-ranging strategy to find new revenue as it deals with crippling debt.

MIA's annual operating cost is about $600 million but will skyrocket to $1.1 billion by 2015.

The decision to reject the proposal is good news for two other Miami area pari-mutuels. Hialeah Park and Flagler Dog Track/Magic City Casino had opposed the new competition.
