Families Settle in Columbine Lawsuit
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The families of five students slain in the Columbine High School (search) massacre have settled their wrongful death lawsuit against the parents of the two teenage gunmen, an attorney said Wednesday.
Gary Lozow, who represents the parents of gunman Dylan Klebold (search), said the agreement was filed in federal court Tuesday. He wouldn't discuss terms but said Thomas and Susan Klebold would release a statement about the settlement at a later date.
Attorneys who represent the victims' families and the parents of the other gunman, Eric Harris (search), did not immediately return calls seeking comment.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The families of Columbine victims Daniel Rohrbough, Kelly Fleming, Matt Kechter, Lauren Townsend and Kyle Velasquez had sued the Klebolds and Wayne and Katherine Harris, claiming they knew or should have known what their sons were up to before the April 20, 1999, shootings.
The two teens killed 12 students and a teacher before committing suicide at the school in the Denver suburb of Littleton.
The families' attorney, Barry Arrington, argued that the Klebolds and Harrises were liable for not being aware of or not doing anything about the gunplay and bombmaking activities of their sons.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The five families had declined to participate in an earlier $1.6 million settlement reached by 30 other Columbine families in 2001.
The Klebolds and Harrises still face another lawsuit brought by the family of slain student Isaiah Shoels, whose family is contesting whether they agreed to part of the 2001 settlement.
