SANTA ANA, California – A 75-year-old woman who ran over and killed an 89-year-old pedestrian in a church parking lot has been sentenced to nine months in jail, but could be allowed to fulfill the sentence through home confinement.
Ana Torres was sentenced Friday after being convicted last month of one count of felony hit-and-run and one misdemeanor count each of vehicular manslaughter and providing false information to police.
Torres has insisted she didn't hit victim Jessie Pound as she left the parking lot of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Placentia in August 2007. Pound's DNA was found on Torres' car.
During trial, a witness said he heard Pound's skull crack and heard her scream as the car rolled over her.
At Friday's hearing, Torres again said she was innocent.
