Dropout Candidates Still Drew Votes
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}The recall candidates who bowed out before Tuesday's election received a small consolation prize: Thousands of people voted for them anyway.
Independent Arianna Huffington (search), who dropped out of the race last week, received 42,317 votes with more than 99 percent of precincts reporting. The columnist's total was a far cry from Arnold Schwarzegger's more than 3.6 million votes, or even Green Party candidate Peter Camejo's roughly 209,700, but still better than former opponents who dropped out earlier.
Republican Peter Ueberroth (search), the former baseball commissioner, pulled in 21,739 votes despite giving up his candidacy nearly a month ago. He outdistanced less serious but still active candidates such as porn magnate Larry Flynt and former child star Gary Coleman (search), who got 15,184 votes and 12,565, respectively.
{{#rendered}} {{/rendered}}Republican businessman Bill Simon, who finished just behind Gov. Gray Davis in last year's election, dropped out of the recall election in August. This time partial returns showed him with 7,769 votes, behind porn star Mary Carey (search), with 9,889.
