An Ohio University-Chillicothe basketball player died after collapsing during practice at the school, the university said.

Jonathan Davis, 20, a sophomore from Hampton, Va., fell to the floor around 6:30 p.m. Monday and was taken to Adena Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, said Jack Jeffery, a spokesman for the school about 45 miles south of Columbus.

"He was a very outstanding, mature gentleman," Jeffery said. "It's just tragic."

The school was not aware that Davis had any health problems, he said.

A message seeking comment about autopsy arrangements was left Tuesday for Dr. John Gabis, the Ross County Coroner.

The university has temporarily suspended OU-Chillicothe men's and women's sports events and practices. Grief counselors were made available for Davis' teammates and classmates.

Arrangements for a memorial service are pending, Jeffery said.
