Coast Guard Gives Up Search for Fisherman Off Massachusetts Coast

The U.S. Coast Guard has ended its search for a missing New Bedford fisherman.

The Coast Guard said in a statement that the search for 57-year-old Antonio Mesquita ended at about 9:40 on Friday morning after two cutters, a helicopter and a jet scoured more than 280-square miles of ocean over 30 hours.

Mesquita was the captain of the 71-foot Costa & Corvo, which capsized just after midnight Thursday. Another fishing boat, the Mary K, was about two miles away and pulled three crew members from the water.

The rescued crew members were not seriously hurt. They were identified as Francisco Brito, Joao Matias and Jorge Talma, all of New Bedford.

Mesquita's daughter, Sandra Silveirinha, described her father as "a strong man, inside and out."
