Cleveland Clinic Won't Hire Smokers

The Cleveland Clinic will ban the hiring of smokers beginning September 1.

The move is part of a healthy work force initiative that included today's appointment of best-selling author Doctor Michael Roizen as chief wellness officer of the research hospital.

The clinic is Ohio's second biggest employer with 36,000 employees.

The policy will not affect current employees, who can get free stop-smoking help from the clinic. The clinic has removed trans fats from its cafeteria menus and sugar-sweetened beverages from its vending machines.
