LONDON – A British newspaper has retracted a story that claimed Prince Philip has prostate cancer.
London's Evening Standard says it has apologized for making what it called "this distressing allegation" and for breaching Philip's privacy.
The newspaper reported Wednesday that the 87-year-old husband of Queen Elizabeth II was diagnosed with cancer in April after tests conducted while he was in the hospital for a chest infection.
Buckingham Palace denied the report and said it is filing a complaint with Britain's press watchdog.
The Evening Standard said Friday it accepted that its story was untrue.
Since he was hospitalized in April, Philip has accompanied the queen on a series of trips and other duties.
