Border Inspector Pleads Guilty to Smuggling Illegal Aliens

A former U.S. border inspector pleaded guilty Wednesday to two federal counts of smuggling illegal aliens and conspiracy.
Adam Bender, 49, of Eastpointe, and two other men face five years in prison and fines up to $250,000 if convicted.
Hassan Saad, 35, of Detroit, and Hani Bazzi, of Windsor, Ontario, pleaded guilty earlier.

Authorities said Bender used his border patrol position to allow illegal aliens, accompanied by Saad, to enter the United States from Canada.

"The protection of our borders is the keystone without which the structure of our homeland security would be unsound," said Detroit-based U.S. Attorney Stephen J. Murphy.

Bender was to be sentenced Oct. 11 by U.S. District Judge Robert H. Cleland.
