Lieutenant General (Retired) Jared L. Bates is Coordinator of Operations for the Office of Reconstruction and Humanitarian Assistance. Prior to this appointment, General Bates served as Senior Vice President and GM, National Group, MPRI, since 1997. He has taken a leave of absence from National Group, MPRI.
General Bates has commanded soldiers at every level from a platoon of 40 men to a Division of 16,000 men and women. He has served in an exceptionally wide variety of units (ranger, airborne, both light and mechanized infantry and armored units).
As a General Officer, General Bates served as Assistant Division Commander of the 7th Infantry Division, as J-3, U.S. Forces Command and as Commanding General, 5th Infantry Division (Ft. Polk) and later as CG, 2d Armored Division (Ft. Hood). He followed his command tour with an assignment as Vice J3, The Joint Staff. General Bates was promoted to Lieutenant General in 1995 and served his final tour as the Inspector General, U.S. Army. He retired in December 1997.
General Bates' unit assignments as a junior officer included an airborne infantry battalion in Germany, two tours in the republic of Viet Nam (one as an advisor to a Vietnamese Ranger Battalion and one as a company commander in the 173d Airborne Brigade), and service as an instructor at the Army's Ranger School. As a field grade officer, General Bates served as a staff officer in the Army's Personnel Center, and spent three years with the 2d Ranger Battalion. He commanded the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry, was G3 of the 3d Infantry Division, commanded the 3d Brigade, 82d Airborne Division and was Chief of Staff of that Division.
General Bates holds a BS from Cornell University and an MA from the Kansas University. In addition to attending each of the appropriated Army Schools from Basic Course through Army War College, he is a graduate of the Royal College of Defence Studies in London. His awards include the Defense Distinguished Service Medal, the Army Distinguished Service Medal (with oak leaf cluster), the Legion of Merit (with three oak leaf clusters), and the Bronze Star Medal ( with oak leaf cluster). He wears the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Ranger Tab and is a Master Parachutist.
Lieutenant General Bates is a native of Trumansburg, New York. He graduated from Cornell University in 1964 and was commissioned as an Infantry Officer in the Regular Army.
