Bill Ford Jr. Miffed by Barack Obama's Criticism of Auto Industry

One of America's top automakers' chiefs took aim Thursday at presidential candidate Barack Obama for remarks the Democrat made earlier this spring about lagging behind foreign competitors on fuel-efficient cars.

"I would love to invite [Obama] to our Chicago assembly plant in his state and see where we make a vehicle that's more efficient than the one he's currently driving," Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. said Thursday to a round of applause, according to The Detroit News.

Speaking before the Detroit business leaders conference Thursday, Ford also said he was "very disappointed" with the Illinois senator's criticism.

Ford was targeting a eight-cylinder Chrysler 300C that Obama owned, but Obama's campaign said Fridah that the Chrysler has been sold, and he now drives a Ford Escape hybrid car.

Speaking before the Detroit Economic Club in March, Obama said, "Here in Detroit, three giants of American industry are hemorrhaging jobs and profits as foreign competitors answer the rising global demand for fuel-efficient cars."
