SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – More than a dozen people have been sickened and 1,200 others evacuated from a converted shopping mall in Scottsdale, Ariz., after reports of a bad smell in the building.
Scottsdale Fire Department spokeswoman Patty Jo Angelini says people in the old Scottsdale Galleria mall reported a bad odor at about 3 p.m. on Friday and that some people were having trouble breathing and were nauseous.
The cause of the odor isn't known. Angelini says between 12 and 20 people are affected and a dozen will be taken to local hospitals.
The mall was converted into a mixed-use office and retail facility several years ago.
