Authorities canceled an Amber Alter for an 8-year-old boy Wednesday after his father brought him to a social services office in Pittsboro.

Police said the boy, Jose Angel Fitzpatrick, and his father, Kenneth Paul Fitzpatrick, showed up with their pastor. The alert was issued Wednesday morning.

Father and son disappeared Tuesday after police and social services workers went to their home to take custody of the child. Social workers believed Jose Fitzpatrick had been abused, based on information from the boy's school, said police Major Bill Harman.

Harman said Kenneth Fitzpatrick claimed his son was on a plane to El Paso, Texas, but police later determined that wasn't true. Police returned to the home but discovered father and son were missing.

Authorities believed the child was in danger Wednesday and said the family had relatives in Mexico.
