BUCKEYE, Ariz. – A state Department of Corrections spokesman says 11 people were injured after a fight broke out at a prison west of Phoenix.
Spokesman Barrett Marson says the fight started between two inmates after lunch Saturday. It mushroomed to include an unknown number of inmates at the Lewis prison complex.
The prison is located near Buckeye, about 35 miles west of Phoenix.
Marson says five inmates were taken to area hospitals. Their conditions weren't released. Marson says six victims were treated by Arizona Department of Corrections staff.
The fight occurred in a unit that has been placed on lockdown.
The prison also was the site of a fight among more than 100 inmates that injured 7 inmates and a corrections officer in November.
