Yankees put in claim on Cubs' Pena

The New York Yankees have put in a waiver claim on Chicago Cubs first baseman Carlos Pena, according to a report on MLB.com.

The Yankees and Cubs have two days to complete a deal, though New York general manager Brian Cashman was quoted in the report as saying he was "not optimistic" of the two sides coming to an agreement.

The left-handed hitting Pena would likely serve as New York's designated hitter if a trade can be worked out. Entering Wednesday's action, Pena was hitting just .223, but had hit 23 home runs with 67 runs batted in and a respectable .342 on-base percentage.

The Cubs signed the 33-year-old to a one-year deal in the offseason.
