Western Illinois suspends two running backs

Western Illinois senior Caulton Ray and junior Bryce Flowers were suspended indefinitely for an undisclosed violation of team rules, head football coach Mark Hendrickson announced Monday.

Ray, a 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back from Southfield, Mich., led WIU in rushing with 620 yards in eight games last season.

He served a prior team suspension at the start of last season and was kicked off the team at his former school, Michigan State, in 2009.

Flowers, a 5-10, 205-pound junior running back from Pittsburg, Calif., rushed for 158 yards in seven games last season.

Both players were voted to the Missouri Valley Football Conference All- Newcomer Team in 2010.

"Being a member of the Leatherneck Football program is a privilege. I expect every student-athlete to uphold the rules and standards we set forth," Hendrickson said.

The Leathernecks are wrapping up spring practice this week with an intrasquad game on Saturday.
