Amsterdam, Netherlands – Louis van Gaal has been appointed manager of the Netherlands national team following the resignation of Bert van Marwijk after Euro 2012.
Van Gaal managed the Netherlands from 2000-02, but failed to help the team qualify for the 2002 World Cup.
However, the 60-year-old Van Gaal has since enjoyed successful spells with both AZ Alkmaar and Bayern Munich since leaving the Dutch national team.
"The Dutch Royal Football Federation (KNVB) this evening reached an agreement with Louis van Gaal over his appointment as the coach of the Dutch national eleven," the KNVB said in a statement. "Van Gaal has signed a contract that will link him from August 1 this year until the end of the World Cup in 2014."
Van Marwijk stepped down after a disappointing Euro 2012 performance that saw his team lose all three of its group matches and crash out of the competition.
Van Gaal has captured seven league titles in four different European leagues during his career, and he led Ajax to the 1994-95 Champions League title, a feat he nearly repeated in 2010 with Bayern Munich as the German side lost to Inter Milan in the final of the tournament.
