Valeri loaned to Portland as DP

The Portland Timbers revealed Thursday that the club has secured a loan deal for Argentine midfielder Diego Valeri as a Designated Player.

Valeri joins the Timbers from Argentine first-division side Lanus where he spent nine seasons (2003-09; 2011-12). He appeared in 158 matches for the club, recording 25 goals. He recently served as the team's captain.

"Valeri is a tremendous acquisition and his desire to join the Portland Timbers was an integral part in getting him on loan," said Timbers general manager Gavin Wilkinson. "At his age and with his ability, we expect to be in a position to purchase this player and make him a permanent fixture in Portland."

The 26-year-old made his debut with Argentina national team in 2011 and has gone on to make two more appearances for his country, both of which were in friendly matches the same year.
