United striker Rooney out for rest of EPL season

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney will miss the rest of the Premier League season because of a groin injury but should be fit to play for England at the World Cup in June.

Rooney had only just recovered from an ankle injury when he hurt his groin in training on Thursday.

United manager Alex Ferguson said after Saturday's 3-1 victory over Tottenham that "it might take two or three weeks" for Rooney's groin injury to heal.

While that would rule him out of United's final two Premier League matches, it should not endanger his hopes of playing in England's World Cup opener against United States on June 12.

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney missed Saturday's match against Tottenham with a groin injury, another setback for the England player ahead of the World Cup.

Rooney only returned to action last weekend against Manchester City after missing the previous two matches with an ankle injury.

United manager Alex Ferguson says Rooney "got a groin injury on Thursday. Groin injuries at this time of year with firm grounds are a problem."

After Saturday's match, United has just two more games remaining this season.

England's World Cup opens against the United States on June 12.
