United manager Ferguson says he's not retiring

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson has no intention of retiring at the end of the Premier League season.

Several British papers reported recently that the 68-year-old Ferguson was going to step down after 24 years in charge at Old Trafford, but the country's most successful manager said Friday that he had not contemplated it.

"It is rubbish," Ferguson said. "There is no truth in it."

Ferguson initially announced his intention to retire at the end of the 2001-02 season, when his team was also chasing a record fourth straight Premier League title.

But he changed his mind following a slump by his team and has since led the club to another four league titles to tie Liverpool with a record 18.

Following that experience, Ferguson says that he would not reveal any plans to voluntarily quit to anyone but the chief executive and club owners.

"I have no intention of retiring and if I did the people I would tell are David Gill and the Glazer family," Ferguson said.
