U.S. off to 2-0 lead on Slovakia in Davis Cup playoff

Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - John Isner and Sam Querrey each came up with singles victories to put the United States a point away from winning its Davis Cup playoff tie with Slovakia.

Isner gave the Americans an early upper hand with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-2 verdict over Norbert Gambos on an indoor hardcourt at Sears Centre. Querrey followed up with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 6-3 decision over Martin Klizan to stake the U.S. to a 2-0 lead in this best-of-five tie.

This week's winner in Chicago will qualify for the World Group in next year's Davis Cup, which the record 32-time champion Americans haven't captured since 2007.

Saturday's doubles will feature the mighty American Bryan brothers, Bob and Mike, fresh off their U.S. Open title taking on Lukas Lacko and Michal Mertinak. Sunday's reverse singles have the 16th-ranked Isner facing Klizan and the world No. 51 Querrey battling Gombos.
