Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - John Isner and Sam Querrey each came up with singles victories to put the United States a point away from winning its Davis Cup playoff tie with Slovakia.
Isner gave the Americans an early upper hand with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4, 6-2 verdict over Norbert Gambos on an indoor hardcourt at Sears Centre. Querrey followed up with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 6-3 decision over Martin Klizan to stake the U.S. to a 2-0 lead in this best-of-five tie.
This week's winner in Chicago will qualify for the World Group in next year's Davis Cup, which the record 32-time champion Americans haven't captured since 2007.
