Tigers 3B Cabrera takes AL monthly honors

Detroit Tigers third baseman Miguel Cabrera was named the American League Player of the Month for August.
Cabrera batted .357 with six doubles and eight homers, while driving in 24 and scoring 19 runs. He also ranked fourth in batting average, finished second in homers and tied for second most runs batted in among league leaders.
The 29-year-old also collected 65 total bases for the month, giving him 300 for the season, marking the fifth consecutive year he has reached the plateau.

Heading into play on Tuesday, Cabrera ranks in the top five in the Triple crown categories with a .331 batting average, 33 homers and 111 RBI.
It is his second career monthly honor. Cabrera became the first Detroit player since Alan Trammell to win more than once as a Tiger.
Others who were considered for the award included Cabrera's teammate, first baseman Prince Fielder, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim first baseman Albert Pujols and Texas Rangers third baseman Adrian Beltre.
