This Week in Golf -- Aug. 30 through Sept. 3

PGA TOUR - DEUTSCHE BANK CHAMPIONSHIP, TPC Boston, Norton, Mass. - The PGA Tour FedExCup Playoffs continue with the Deutsche Bank Championship, the second of four events.

Nick Watney won The Barclays this past weekend to vault into first in the FedExCup points list, ahead of Brandt Snedeker and two-time FedExCup champion Tiger Woods.

Many of golf's best players -- including Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Luke Donald, Ernie Els and Bubba Watson -- are in the field this week. So is Jason Dufner, who elected to skip The Barclays but is safely near the top of the points list, in sixth.

Last year, Webb Simpson birdied his final three holes, including both playoff holes, to beat Chez Reavie and capture the title. He had earned his first PGA Tour title two weeks prior to the 2011 Deutsche Bank Championship.

Simpson, who won the U.S. Open in June, is back to defend his title.

This event runs Friday to Monday, and Golf Channel is the lone broadcaster for the first two days. NBC and Golf Channel will have coverage Sunday and Monday.

The playoff field was whittled from 125 to 100 eligible players following The Barclays, and just 70 will be able to play in the BMW Championship next week in Carmel, Indiana. Justin Rose won the event last year.

EUROPEAN TOUR

OMEGA EUROPEAN MASTERS, Crans-sur-Sierre, Crans Montana, Switzerland - The European Tour heads to southwest Switzerland this week for the European Masters.

Last year, Thomas Bjorn fired a 9-under 62 in the final round to earn a four- stroke victory over former world No. 1 and 2010 PGA Championship winner Martin Kaymer. It was Bjorn's second title in as many weeks.

Bjorn is back to defend his title, while Paul Lawrie is also in the field. He won the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles this past weekend.

Other notable players competing this week include Australian legend Greg Norman, a two-time winner of the British Open; Northern Ireland's Darren Clarke, last year's Open champion; Spain's Miguel Angel Jimenez, the 2010 European Masters winner; American John Daly; and South Africa's Branden Grace, a three-time titlist on the European Tour this season.

Golf Channel has TV coverage for all four rounds.

Next week, the European holds the KLM Open in the Netherlands. Simon Dyson was last year's winner.

WEB.COM TOUR

MYLAN CLASSIC, Southpointe Golf Club, Canonsburg, Penn. - The Web.com Tour heads to western Pennsylvania for the third running of the Mylan Classic.

Both former winners, Gary Christian and Kevin Kisner, are in the field for the event. Last year, Christian closed with a four-under 67 to win by a single stroke over John Mallinger.

Casey Wittenberg and Ben Kohles, who are second and third on the tour money list and have both won twice this season, are scheduled to compete. So is Darron Stiles, last week's winner of the News Sentinel Open in Tennessee.

Golf Channel has coverage for all four days of the event.

Following the Mylan Classic, the Web.com Tour has a week off and picks back up September 13 with the Boise Open in Idaho. Jason Kokrak earned the title last year.
