Cat Bouwkamp (Fishers, Ind.), Ryan Estep (Florence, Miss.) medal sweep of the fencing events on August 12 at the Wheelchair Pan American Championships in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to qualify for the London 2012 Paralympic Games. Two members of previous Paralympic Teams also qualified for London, as Gerard Moreno (Los Angeles, Calif.) qualified for his fourth team and Gary Van Der Wiege (Kyle, Texas) qualified for his second Games.
Breaking Records
The Pan Pacific Para-Swimming Championships ended on August 14 with astounding performances by the U.S. team. Jessica Long (Baltimore, Md.) and Mallory Weggemann (Eagan, Minn.) each won seven individual gold medals and contributed to a pair of relay victories for a total of nine gold medals apiece during the five-day meet.Long broke four world records, while Weggemann broke one.
Archery
Miranda Leek (Des Moines, Iowa) held the top qualification spot for the recurve women's class with a 637 at the SoCal Showdown, which ran from Aug. 12-14 in Chula Vista, Calif. For the recurve men, Brady Ellison (Gilbert, Ariz.) finished atop his category's qualifications with 661. The compound women were led by Jamie Van Natta (Toledo, Ohio), who shot a 685 to end in the No. 1 spot, while Rodger Willett, Jr. (Gloucester, Va.) shot a solid 706 to take the top seed in the men's compound category.
Badminton
Team USA opened competition on Aug. 8 at the 2011 World Badminton Championships in London, England, where the sister duo of Iris Wang (Arcadia, Calif.) and Rena Wang (Arcadia, Calif.) were the only U.S. athletes to advance to second round. Their journey was cut short the following day when the sisters were eliminated by Singapore.
Baseball
Willie Aguilar (Lawndale, Calif.) went 3-for-4 with six RBI on Aug. 13 to lead the U.S. to a 12-7 victory over Panama to open the COPABE Pan American 14- Under Championships in San Felipe, Venezuela.
Basketball
John Jenkins (Hendersonville, Tenn.) led the USA Men's World University Games Team to a 102-53 victory over Hungary, while setting a 3-pointer U.S. record for the World University Games on Aug. 14. The following day, South Korea was no match for the U.S., as the Americans cruised to a 112-68 win. Meanwhile, the 2011 USA Basketball Women's World University Games Team posed an impressive 112-53 opening victory over Brazil on Aug. 14, before garnering a 114-63 win over Slovakia on Aug. 15.
Canoe/Kayak
Scott Parsons (Bethesda, Md.) and Casey Eichfeld (Drums, Penn.) came just shy of earning berths in the final rounds at the Slalom World Cup No. 4 in Prague, Czech Republic, which ran from Aug. 12-14.
Cycling
Tyler Farrar (Wenatchee, Wash.) finished 87th at the London-Surrey Cycle Classic on The Mall in London on Aug. 14 after getting caught up in crash with less than three kilometers remaining. Caught behind the crash, Ty Magner (Athens, Ga.) and Ian Boswell (Bend, Ore.) finished 67th and 68th, while Gavin Mannion (Dedham, Mass.) was 88th.
A group of American cyclists contested the Union Cycliste Internationale Mountain Bike World Cup event in Nove Mesto Na Morave, Czech Republic. Stephen Ettinger (Cashmere, Wash.) posted the best finish, placing fifth in the men's under-23 contest on Aug. 13. Ettinger is in eighth place on the UCI's Mountain Bike cross-country standings with one event remaining on the calendar.
Diving
The AT&T National Diving Championships concluded on Aug. 14 in Los Angeles, where Longhorn Aquatics was declared the overall men's team champion and Indiana Diving won both the women's team and overall team titles. High point award winners were Ben Grado (Morrison, Colo.) and Amanda Burke (Southampton, Penn.), while Kristian Ipsen (Clayton, Calif.) and Cassidy Krug (Corapolis, Penn.) won both individual and synchronized titles.
Ice Hockey
Team USA defeated Switzerland on Aug. 13 to go unbeaten and take 1st place at the 2011 Under-17 Five Nations Tournament in Ann Arbor, Mich.
Modern Pentathlon
On the women's side, 2008 Olympian Margaux Isaksen (Fayetteville, Ark.) won the 2011 U.S. Modern Pentathlon National Championships on Aug. 13 at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The following day, Dennis Bowsher (Dallas, Texas), a member of the U.S. Army's World Class Athlete Program and a resident athlete at the Colorado Springs OTC, won his fourth national title.
Rugby
The U.S women's team held South Africa without a try on Aug. 13 in a 29-9 victory that gave the team third place in the Women's Nations Cup rugby event in Oakville, Ont.
The U.S. men's team lost to Canada, 27-7, on Aug. 13 before a sellout crowd in Glendale, Colo., in the second of its three tune-up matches for the Rugby World Cup.
Sailing
The 2011 Weymouth and Portland International Regatta - an Olympic test event - concluded Aug. 13 in London. The 12-day competition saw seven top-10 finishes by U.S. athletes in star, finn, and women's 470. Paige Railey (Clearwater, Fla.) took third place in laser radial, while Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), Alana O'Reilly (Charleston, S.C.) and Elizabeth Kratzig Burnham (Miami Beach, Fla.) finished third in women's match racing.
Swimming
The U.S. Team earned silver medals in four of six events on Aug. 14 at the World University Games in Shenzhen, China, including Haley Anderson (Edmond, Okla.) in women's 800 freestyle, Bobby Bollier (Mission Hills, Kan.) in men's 200 fly, Rex Tullius (Port Orange, Fla.) in men's 200 backstroke and the women's 4x100 freestyle relay team. The U.S. added five more medals on Aug. 15, led by gold-medal performances from Tim Phillips (Vienna, W.V.) in the 50 fly, Michael Klueh (Evansville, Ind.) in the 800 free and the men's 4x100 free relay team.
Track & Field
Bette Wade (Northville, Mich.) won the women's heptathlon, while Joe Detmer (Lodi, Wis.) finished second in the men's decathlon at the Jim Thorpe Cup in Chula Vista, Calif., on Aug. 13-14.
Triathlon
Gwen Jorgensen (Waukesha, Wis.) posted her first ITU Triathlon World Cup victory on Aug. 14 in Tiszaujvaros, Hungary, coming from 70 seconds behind with her closing run on the way to a winning time of 1:59:54.
Volleyball
The U.S. women's volleyball team had its 16-match FIVB World Grand Prix winning streak snapped on Aug. 14 in a 25-12, 17-25, 25-23, 25-15 loss to Serbia during Pool H action in Komaki, Japan. The United States won its final 11 matches last year and started 5-0 in the Grand Prix this year. More The U.S. Team of Jen Kessy (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) and April Ross (Newport Beach, Calif.) captured the silver medal at the FIVB "Road to London" Visa International Test Event held in London. Brazil's Liliane Maestrini and Angela Vieria defeated Kessy and Ross, 10-21, 21-15, 15-13, in the final.
Water Ski
Forty-three athletes won national titles at the 69th annual GOODE Water Ski National Championships at Waters Edge Estates in Wilmington, Ill., the world's largest three-event water ski tournament that ran from Aug. 7-14.
Thirty-six athletes claimed national titles at the 34th annual Parson's Roofing Barefoot Water Ski National Championships on Aug.10-13 at the Barefoot Ski Ranch in Waco, Texas.
The Rock Aqua Jays Water Ski Show Team (Janesville, Wis.) won the national team title at the 37th Indmar Marine Engines Division 1 Show Ski National Championships, which ran from Aug. 12-14 on the Rock River at Traxler Park in Janesville, Wis. It was the Rock Aqua Jays' 16th national team title.
