Tests normal on ex-FIFA chief Joao Havelange, 95

Medical tests on Joao Havelange have come back normal, but the 95-year-old former FIFA president remains in serious condition.

The Hospital Samaritano said in a statement Friday that chest and abdominal tests showed no further problems. Havelange's health deteriorated in the last few days because of heart and breathing problems.

Doctors said the right ankle infection that prompted his hospitalization more than a month ago is under control, but he is still receiving medication to control blood pressure and heart function. He is also getting antibiotics.

Havelange ran soccer's governing body from 1974-98. He resigned from the International Olympic Committee late last year, avoiding a possible suspension for allegedly taking kickbacks from a former FIFA marketing partner.
